Part one of conversation “Standing in the In-Between”
Focus: Liminality, perfectionism, self-kindness, and creative surrender
1. “When you were scoring the film, was there a moment you realized perfectionism was holding you back—and what helped you let go?”
2. “Do you think we romanticize ‘discipline’ too much in the creative process—especially in school or music education?”
3. “What did the most difficult day of the scoring process teach you—not just about music, but about yourself?”

Featuring music from DILEMMA – a film by Leo Acksel, Produced by Georgia May, film score by Matteo Hoyer
LIMINALITY
Liminality within this context of Art and Learning is about giving oneself space , being gentle to oneself. While still celebrating perfection, it’s permission to the self to embrace and to learn also from errors and uncertainty. Liminality is the state of being in-between – a transitional phase where one is neither fully in the old nor in the new.
Key Aspects of Liminality
Transition & Ambiguity – It’s a space of uncertainty, where familiar structures dissolve, but new ones have not yet solidified.
Disorientation & Potential – Liminal states often feel uncomfortable because they lack clear rules, yet they are also rich with creative and transformative potential.
Social & Psychological Change – It can apply to personal growth (e.g., adolescence, career shifts), cultural shifts (e.g., revolutions, paradigm shifts), or even physical spaces (e.g., airports, borders).
